Urban Dreaming is an immersive movement opera that transcends traditional storytelling, drawing its audience into a visceral journey through our shared human experiences, the constraints that bind us, and the timeless pulse that unites all living beings. Set against a backdrop of Austin’s urban landscape, this opera fuses contemporary and aerial dance and music to explore the confinement of the human spirit—through walls both physical and invisible. It unearths personal memories, and collective trauma, transforming them into movement. At its core, Urban Dreaming is about connection—how, despite the barriers of time, identity, and circumstance, we remain linked by an invisible thread of universal energy. This opera invites audiences to remember, to feel, and ultimately to dream together. As the performers move from isolation to communion, the work blossoms into resilience and hope. Urban Dreaming is not just a performance—it is a call to awaken, to remember our sacred interconnectedness, and to imagine a world where we move as one. In classical music, a movement is a self-contained section of a larger work—like a chapter in a book—each with its own mood, tempo, and structure, yet contributing to a unified whole. In Urban Dreaming, the term movement opera reflects both this musical structure and the central role of physical expression. Rather than using traditional spoken or sung dialogue, the performers communicate through contemporary and aerial dance—the language of the body. The work is divided into distinct movements, each with its own emotional arc or theme, functioning as standalone pieces that together form a cohesive and immersive journey. While each movement can be appreciated individually, the full power of Urban Dreaming emerges when experienced in succession—as a transformation from fragmentation to connection, from isolation to collective dreaming.
